How Docker used open-source ideals and excellent timing to become a cloud darling

Ben Golub isn’t surprised that his startup Docker’s take on container technology has caused this much of a buzz throughout the tech industry; it just happened a whole lot sooner than he thought. Before the printing press nobody wrote because it was a pain to produce content, said Golub, CEO of the four-year-old company. I think Docker in a smaller way is enabling developers to be able to put all their energy into creating amazing applications, rather than worrying about the minutiae of how they are going to run and how they are going to scale and it is a beautiful thing.

10 DIY Kits & Modules To Experiment With Electronics

Do-it-yourself electronics used to be the domain of the super geeky, but over the past few years things have really changed. Platforms and computers like Arduino and the Raspberry Pi have given rise to a whole new maker culture, and it’s now easier than ever to get started experimenting with, learning and building DIY electronics projects. From Arduino and Arduino-compatible boards to complete DIY electronic kits, there’s something out there for everyone. With so many modules and kits available on the market, though, it can be a bit confusing if you’re not too well-versed in the subject. While it’s probably impossible to compile a definitive list of must-haves, it’s always nice to have a place to start. …

Scoop: A Glimpse Into the NYTimes CMS

You know the importance of technology to the future of journalism has become a widely accepted fact when a prominent editor decides to join a new company because of its content management system. That’s what Ezra Klein told The New York Times about his decision to leave The Washington Post for Vox Media, a digital publisher with a fancy, custom-built CMS. Klein couldn’t quite describe what made the Vox system so special, but the fact that a journalist said he loved, let alone even tolerated, his CMS was all you needed to know that the world has changed. Suddenly, the CMS, an often derided but necessary tool of modern journalism, is cool. Vox uses its CMS as a recruiting tool. Google is not-so…

The Next 20 Years Are Going To Make The Last 20 Look Like We Accomplished Nothing In Tech

The Edge Kevin Kelly The world is hitting its stride in technological advances and futurists have been making wild-sounding bets on what we’ll accomplish in the not-so-distant future. Futurist Ray Kurzweil, for example, believes that by 2040 artificial intelligence will be so good, humans will be fully-immersed in virtual reality and that something called The Singularity, when technology becomes so advanced that it actually changes the human race irreversibly, will occur. Kevin Kelly, who helped launched Wired in 1993, sat down for an hour-long video interview with John Brockman at The Edge. Kelly believes that the next 20 years in technology will be radical. So much so, that he believes our technological advances will make the previous 20 years “pale” in comparison. “If we were sent …

Poor Man’s 3D Printer Looks Rough, Prints Great!

In this Instructable, Gelstronic proves anyone can afford a 3D printer. Why? Because you can literally build one out of computer e-waste — specifically, DVD/CD drives. His goal was to build a printer for less than a hundred euros. And he darn well did it. The most expensive part was the hot-end coming in at 20 euros. He managed to find a Chinese Arduino MEGA 2560 for only 10 euros, and everything else was basically pocket change. The hot end features a geared NEMA 17 look-a-like stepper motor he found in a printer, and the XYZ axis all make use of the DVD drive trays. The only downside to this massive reusing of e-waste is the bed size. Due to the limited range of motion…
