Looks like there’s a new record for the fastest crowdfunding of $1 million, and it ain’t for a movie this time – it’s for a server company that’s trying to wean businesses off the public cloud. I wrote about Protonet, a German startup that makes secure servers for small teams, last July. It was just after the Snowden revelations began, and the company had duly picked up a $1.2 million investment to help it attract business customers who were suddenly extra-cautious around U.S.-hosted cloud services. Workaround for Updating a Hyper-V Generation 2 VM with KB2920189

During my last updating round, I noticed that a number of VMs in my Windows Azure Pack lab, had problems with security update KB2920189. Reading the Microsoft Security Advisory, it states that Microsoft is revoking the digital signature for four private, third-party UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) modules that could be loaded during UEFI Secure Boot. These UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) modules are partner modules distributed in backup and recovery software. When the update is applied, the affected UEFI modules will no longer be trusted and will no longer load on systems where UEFI Secure Boot is enabled. Microsoft’s official support for the Windows XP operating system ended more than a month ago. While some companies and organizations are still receiving updates for the operating system, end users do not. These companies pay Microsoft for that, usually because they were not able or willed to migrate computer’s running Windows XP to another operating system before the extended support phase for the system ended. There is another exception to the end of support rule: Windows Embedded Industry, formerly known as Windows Embedded POSReady, operating systems continue to receive updates. Facebook and Akamai responded to VentureBeat’s report. The National Security Agency and the FBI teamed up in October 2010 to develop techniques for turning Facebook into a surveillance tool. Documents released alongside security journalist Glenn Greenwald’s new book, “No Place To Hide,” reveal the NSA and FBI partnership, in which the two agencies developed techniques for exploiting Facebook chats, capturing private photos, collecting IP addresses, and gathering private profile data. According to the slides below, the agencies’ goal for such collection was to capture “a very rich source of information on targets,” including personal details, pattern of life, connections to associates, and media.
