With ‘The Machine,’ HP May Have Invented a New Kind of Computer

If Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard are spinning in their graves, they may be due for a break. Their namesake company is cooking up some awfully ambitious industrial-strength computing technology that, if and when it’s released, could replace a data center’s worth of equipment with a single refrigerator-size machine. Photograph by Richard Lewington/Hewlett-PackardHP CTO Martin Fink in the Photonics laboratory at HP LabsThat’s what they’re calling it at HP Labs: the Machine. It’s basically a brand-new type of computer architecture that HP’s engineers say will serve as a replacement for today’s designs, with a new operating system, a different type of memory, and superfast data transfer. The company says …

Computer becomes first to pass Turing Test in artificial intelligence milestone, but academics warn of dangerous future

A programme that convinced humans that it was a 13-year-old boy has become the first computer ever to pass the Turing Test. The test – which requires that computers are indistinguishable from humans – is considered a landmark in the development of artificial intelligence, but academics have warned that the technology could be used for cybercrime. Computing pioneer Alan Turing said that a computer could be understood to be thinking if it passed the test, which requires that a computer dupes 30 per cent of human interrogators in five-minute text conversations. Read more: What exactly is the Turing test?Eugene Goostman, a computer programme made by a team based in Russia, succeeded in a test conducted at the Royal Society in London. It convinced 33 per cent…

Moo0 File Monitor Shows Real Time File Changes In Windows

Sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s really going on in Windows’ background. The Moo0 File Monitor shows you real time file changes so you know what’s going on, like when you’re installing software for example. The only sign of anything happening when you’re installing some programs is a notable increase in CPU and RAM usage. You can tell your machine is working, but you’re not sure what it’s doing – or if it’s actually stuck and it’s working hard for no reason. Open up Moo0 File Monitor and you can see what files are being created, deleted, modified, or moved, and you can see when it happened. Bonus: got a jump in CPU and RAM usage and you’re not installing anything? Open up the monitor and you might…

Poor Man’s 3D Printer Looks Rough, Prints Great!

In this Instructable, Gelstronic proves anyone can afford a 3D printer. Why? Because you can literally build one out of computer e-waste — specifically, DVD/CD drives. His goal was to build a printer for less than a hundred euros. And he darn well did it. The most expensive part was the hot-end coming in at 20 euros. He managed to find a Chinese Arduino MEGA 2560 for only 10 euros, and everything else was basically pocket change. The hot end features a geared NEMA 17 look-a-like stepper motor he found in a printer, and the XYZ axis all make use of the DVD drive trays. The only downside to this massive reusing of e-waste is the bed size. Due to the limited range of motion…

Crowdfunding: 3 incredibly tiny PC modules starting at just $15

There was a time when computers were enormous, expensive machines that filled entire rooms. Now you can pick up a tiny desktop computer like the Raspberry Pi for about $35. But there’s room to go even smaller – and cheaper. Three new projects hit crowdfunding campaign Indiegogo recently, with the developers hoping to raise funds to offer incredibly small computer modules for prices as low as $15. These aren’t necessarily systems that will replace your Core i7 desktop PC anytime soon. But they could be used to help set up a wireless media server, print station, home automation system, or other DIY projects. AsiaRF AWM002 mini kit The AWM002 mini kit is basically a little computer module with integrated 802.11n WiFi, 8MB of flash storage, 32MB …
