Sun Microsystems, born in 1982, gone public in 1986, struggling in the 2000s, and absorbed by Oracle in 2010, left its mark on Silicon Valley and the world. In Sun’s wake are 235,000 people who can count themselves as former employees. Its technical splashes continue to ripple through the world today (Sun’s slogan, the network is the computer, seems particularly prescient in today’s world of cloud computing). And its legendary pranks have yet to be topped (like “parking” software guru Bill Joy’s Ferrari in a pond and stabbing a giant tree trunk through former CEO Scott McNealy’s office). IBM maintains an awesome archive of its history, collecting various documents and media it’s released since being founded in 1911. We were especially intrigued by this 1970 press release singing the praises of System/370 Model 145, a mainframe computer that was state of the art at the time of its inception. It had 500 KB of RAM, 233 megabytes of hard disk space, and ran at 2.5 MHz. It took up an entire room. Nowadays, this computer would be able to store a small collection of photos and (slowly) access them. Not much else! You could double its 32,000 characters of control storage to 64,000 by “using a portion of main memory, if needed, to accommodate optionally available functions.” Adjusted for inflation, this computer would cost you between $4.3 million and $10.8 million in …

How Recruiters Really Look at Your LinkedIn Profile and Online Resume

TheLadders conducted a study tracking the eye movements of recruiters when looking at resumes (online and off) and LinkedIn profiles. Besides revealing that recruiters only look at resumes for about six seconds, the study also points out the most important areas job seekers should focus on. Surprisingly, the thirty recruiters tracked over the ten-week study spent nearly a fifth of their time (19%) on a LinkedIn profile looking at the profile photo. Pitching its own candidate profiles, TheLadders points out that the photo gets more attention than more vital career information but the takeaway may actually be to make sure your LinkedIn photo is appropriate and professional.
